Are you pregnant in the Czech Republic?

Make use of our free legal counselling!

If you are staying in the Czech Republic without a visa, do not hesitate to contact us. We will inform you of the options open to you. Don’t be afraid to contact us!

Did you know that you can pay your and your child’s health insurance premiums (without being reported to the Czech Foreign Police)? Health care facilities should not report you to Foreign Police, but it sometimes occurs nevertheless.

If you are legally staying in the Czech Republic, pregnancy should not be a reason to lose your legal status. If you need any further information on employee’s rights, health care access or anything else, please feel free to contact us!

Essential information on children’s health insurance and social benefits:

  • If at least one parent has permanent residence in the Czech Republic or Czech citizenship, health care is covered by the state.
  • If neither parent falls within this category, the parents must provide their children's health insurance themselves. You cannot take out insurance for a child before its birth. If the child has health problems, its health care is not covered by the mother’s insurance. Only a special insurance for pregnancies will partly cover these cases.
  • You are entitled to a birth allowance and parental benefits if you have been legally residing in the Czech Republic for more than a year.
  • After the birth:

  • Children born in the Czech Republic receive their citizenship according to that of their parents.
  • Every child born in the Czech Republic is issued a birth certificate (a certificate confirming a person was born and containing basic information on him or her)—free of charge. For a birth certificate to be issued, you have to ask for it at the register office (matrika).
  • If you give birth to a child in the Czech Republic, you must ask the Police in your area of residence to issue for the child the same kind of visa you have (within 60 days from its birth). With the application for your child’s visa you must also provide the following: (1) a travel document for the child or for its parent, in which the child is also recorded (this is done by your embassy or consulate), (2) the child's birth certificate and (3) proof of your child's health insurance.
  • If you do not want to have a baby or if you are not able to take care of it, contact us! Together, we will find an answer.

It is a crime to abandon a child (for example in a dustbin). In the Czech Republic, it is possible to place a child in a children’s home or to put it —anonymously—in the so called Babyboxes (you can find a list of Babyboxes on www.statim.cz). There are many other solutions to your situation!
